Movie Trailer Round Up 1/6/14

I haven't done one of these round ups for a while due to life but I'll just pick up with the trailers that caught my eye over the past week. Let's just dive right in.

First up is A Walk Among tombstones; a crime thriller/drama staring Liam Neeson as an ex cop turned private investigator who is hired by a drug dealer to find his kidnapped wife. As usual Neeson has been typecast as a cop again and I don't mind seeing as this movie doesn't seem to be focusing too much on the action but rather the crime and I am just a sucker for crime dramas, especially if they are a tad dark. The movie i based of a novel of the same name and has been in production since 2002 when Harrison ford was attached to the lead. Hopefully this movie is good because I would love to see more dark crime dramas and judging from the plot synopsis of the books, that's exactly hat happens over time to the main character, he gets darker and darker.

Next up is a romantic comedy drama that actually came out last year in a limited release at festivals and such and is finally getting released worldwide this year. What If stars Daniel Radcliff as a medical school drop out who befriends a girl but is forced to only be friends as she has a boyfriend. I know this plot sounds cheesy, corny and cliched but for some reason after watching the trailer I feel like watching this movie and I don't really watch many movies of this genre. I'll be honest this movie does seem fresh and funny which will probably hook most people and the buzz from the movie (from last year) has generally been positive. I probably won't watch this in cinemas but will wait for it to hit DVD or something.

This next movie I have had on my radar for a while since it is being produced by Guillermo del Toro. The movie is a animated comedy film which follows Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path he wants to follow he embarks on an adventure that spans three worlds where he must face his fears. If the plot alone didn't get you the art style in the movie will because it isn't you typical animation art style it seems like a cross between Burton and Guillermo and it looks amazing. I will definitely try to catch this one in cinemas cause it seems like one of those movies that is worth a full cinema experience.

Next is a movie from the twisted mind of Eli Roth. Green Inferno is the first movie Roth has made in seven years and that is a long time especially considering the large cult fan base he has from movies such as Hostel. The movie is about a group of nameless college students who fly to Peru in an effort to save the rainforest only to be stranded and taken captive by a tribe of cannibals. This is where you start seeing the styling of Roth, with his torture and gore being teased. I can almost gaurantee that this movie will be gut wrenching as it takes influence from Cannibal Holocaust. I'm still undecided on this movie but if enough of my mates are keen to watch it I just might go and see this film in cinemas other I will have to wait till it hits DVD.

Finally we have Big Hero 6 the first Marvel based production from Disney's animated team. With the comic background of marvel and the magic of Disney animation it is hard not to get excited for this movie. Not much is known about the story of the movie so far other than it revolves around a group of inexperienced crime fighters. Judging from the teaser we received it seems like this movie will more comedic but I hope for more of a sophisticated story which was promised prior to the teaser. The teaser only shows us a glimpse of Hiro and Baymax (I think) and it seems they are going a different route from the Baymax established in the comics, so it will be interesting to see where this goes. From what is shown it seems like a cookie cutter movie but I really do hope that this movie is anything but cookie cutter.

Kingsman Trailer

Here is a trailer which has little hype since news of this movie has flown under the radar, but let me tell you that this movie should be on your radar for two reasons. Firstly it is helmed by Matthew Vaughn who was behind Kick Ass and Xmen First Class, secondly this story comes from the pages of The secret service which is a comic penned by Mark Millar who also wrote Kick Ass. Seeing as how Vaughn has already done justice for Millar's work I'm the past I have full confidence that he can do it again especially after his amazing work on first class. The story of Kingman is fairly generic but who isn't a sucker for a good spy flick, what this story does differently is that if focuses on the training prior to becoming a secret agent. Anyway I for one am looking forward to this and I wonder how big of a role Samuel L Jackson will play because just from looks alone in the trailer I cracked up.

Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer

Today we got our second (and better) look at Marvel's upcoming gamble: Guardians of the Galaxy. I say gamble because this film can either succeed and make a tonne of money or flop and leave a black mark on marvel's amazing track record which started during phase 1. The trailer finally gives us scenes with Rocket Raccoon talking which people have been wanting to see for ages because Rocket Raccoon will definitely be the star of the show and the most memorable character if he is done properly and marvel need to sell Rocket Raccoon hard so that kids buy the toys and boost sales. Despite sales figures the trailer does look amazing and shows that movie is taking a more light hearted and fun vibe as opposed to a darker vibe (such as in the Winter Soldier). I hope that this movie doesn't sacrifice a good story just to please children because I've been looking forward to this movie for a while and after Iron Man 3, I just don;t want to see another failure because Marvel stories have so much potential. Please be good Guardians, PLEASE!

Interstellar Trailer

Hopefully other movies take a cue from this trailer and see how to make a trailer which doesn't spoil the story yet tells you enough to keep you on the hook. This new trailer for Interstellar looks phenomenal, the setting, the acting, the music, the story all look amazing and that is to be expected from Nolan (trying really hard to hold back my love for Nolan films). The trailer in short tells us that Matthew McConaughey's character is one of the few people that are capable of piloting an ship, but to where? All we know is that man kind is looking for a new place to go and that takes this group of space explorers through a wormhole and towards hopefully mankind's salvation. As I stated at the start this trailer only teases the story to us and keeps us guessing on where this movie will go cause anything can happen and that is what I love about this trailer because lately most trailers just tell you the entire story in three minutes (minus any twists obviously) leaving nothing to the imagination. I for one will have my ass in the cinema to watch this on day one and can only hope that Nolan delivers again, this movie however might not be for everyone since it seems that it is a hardcore science fiction movie which may bore some people.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Trailer

The first trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has hit and it looks amazing. Not only do we get to see Caesar as the liberator of apekind but we get a glimpse into the world that the apes have created for themselves, their home, their family and their future. As you may have guessed when all is bliss for the apes the humans show and cause problems. Of course we have the humans split into two groups, the ape sympathizers lead by Jason Clarke and the anti ape humans lead by Gary Oldman. After the introduction to the story we see glimpses of the apes going to war with the humans and I must admit it looks very bad ass, it's safe to say that I'm super excited for this especially since my favorite sequence in Rise of the Planet of the apes was the amazing bridge battle. Check out the trailer below.

The Salvation Trailer

Today I was shown this trailer by a friend of mine, at first I wasn't interested then he name dropped Mads Mikkelsen. When I heard that name my eyes lit up cause I'm quite a big fan of Mikkelsen as of late (Hannibal and The Hunt). So I went ahead and watched the trailer and I was surprised by how good it looked and how good the soundtrack was. The story is a western about a peaceful American settler who kills the men that murdered his family but in doing so he unleashes the wrath of a gang leader (Jeffery Dean Morgan). From there the plot thickens as the townspeople then betray John (Mads Mikkelsen) forcing him to hunt down the outlaws on his own. I know most people aren't fans of westerns but I don't mind them as long as they have a good cast and story, which are both present in this film. The film opens on the 22nd of May in Denmark and hopefully comes down under soon after that. Until then enjoy this trailer and get ready to see more awesomeness from Mads Mikkelsen.

Trailer/News Round Up #2

I haven't posted much in the past few weeks due to personal stuff (study and weddings) but from here on out should be smooth sailing. This week these four trailers and one teaser caught my attention and hopefully they live up to what they seem to promise.

First up is a trailer for the HBO exclusive show the Leftovers which is set to air late next month (June 29). This show is based on the novel by Tom Perrotta which I haven't yet read and is directed by Damon Lindelof, the guy behind Lost. One thing that all of the trailers for this series have done well is show us so much but so little at the same time. All we know is that 2% of the world's population just up and disappeared. Knowing Lindelof this show will probably have many twists and being on HBO I'll probably be addicted to this show.

We also got a nice little teaser for Guillermo del Toro's latest project on FX called The Strain. The Strain is one I'm looking forward to because of the fact that this time we won;t have vampries that try to woo teenage girls but instead we will get more animalistic and monster like vampires. What really got me was that the teaser oozes psychological horror which is one of my weaknesses.

Next up is the second trailer for the upcoming TMNT movie. I know most people think this movie will fail since it has Michael Bay's name attached but to be honest I can't but feel a little excited for this movie. In this latest trailer we get a better look at all the turtles, and a better look at shredder and master splinter. I hope that we get character featurettes in the future cause I'm just dying to see how they portray splinter and shredder.

Lastly is the trailer for What We Do in Shadows; a movie helmed by the guys behind Flight of the Concords. This movie is a horror comedy much like Shaun of the Dead but with vampires. The movie is basically about vampires who have been room mates for a long time and finally add a new member, as with most new people added to a group a story unfolds. From the trailer though this movie looks hilarious and I will definitely be checking this out when it airs.

Also on a side not it is time for use to say farewell to the Fox show Almost Human which was cancelled after it's first season. So unfortunately we will never know what is beyond the wall or why Kennex's wife joined the Insyndicate. I actually enjoyed this show so I am a bit devastated that I won't get to see the story lines unfold because the show was getting really interesting near the finale. However I can't say I'm surprised this show got cancelled, it was doomed when it took breaks every so often. Some weeks I would just forget the show was out because it took that many breaks that it was hard to know when the next episode aired. On top of the constant breaks the show was aired out of order. Regardless it will be sad to see a sci-fi show go, I guess I will have to wait a while to fill the void left by Fringe.

Trailer/News Round Up #1

Today I was browsing the interwebs for new trailers and clips and found some rather interesting ones which got me pumped up for their respective movies. First up we have a clip from the upcoming Xmen movie which I'm still a bit hesitant about, however this trailer gives the movie some promise:

Next we have a trailer for on of my top anticipated movies for 2014, Gone Girl starring Ben Affleck. This movie is based on the book by Gillian Flynn, having read the book I have high expectations for this movie. Check out the trailer below.

Thirdly we have a sneak peak from the upcoming Amazing Spiderman which hits Aussie cinemas tomorrow (I wont be seeing it till Friday sadly). I really enjoyed the first one and am looking forward to the second and hope that it is equally as enjoyable as the first.

Finally we have a fairly old trailer, ( which I rewatched today) for a movie that came out last year but I have as of yet been unable to obtain a DVD of this movie. I'm eagerly waiting for this movie to land on the shores of Australia so I can sit back and enjoy it because honestly the premise of the movie seems really interesting and it stars Chris Evans (cap america).
