The Goldbergs

Recently after catching up on all my shows and lame university work I started the look for a new show to watch and after seeing all the cancellations this season i saw these majestic words "Goldbergs will return for season 2". I immediately began to do my research on what a Goldberg was and three pieces of information on my knowledge quest got me super excited for the show the first being it stars Jeff Garlin whose acting I began to enjoy after binging on Curb Your Enthusiasm. The second thing that got me interested in this show was that it takes place in the 80s an era of time which for some reason captivates my heart maybe its the amazing video games of the era or the awesome music that graced the era. The third thing that got me interested was the fact that this show is loosely based on the life of Adam F. Goldberg a producer and writer known for gems like Fanboys, Community and the short lived Breaking In. Also before I start I think I should mention that this show is narrated by the talented Patton Oswalt (Just in case you needed more reason to watch the show).

After getting pumped up for this show I started to watch the show and I just couldn't stop. This show isn't the best comedy by a mile but it is definitely one of the more enjoyable comedies out there at the moment. As expected Jeff Garlin is good in his role and usually serves more as the slapstick humor of this show along side Troy Gentile (Barry Goldberg). The show also stars George Segal (Albert Solomon) who plays the cool and very wise grandpa in the show and is by far the funniest character on the show for me.

Sean Giambrone plays Adam Goldberg himself and does a wonderful job of it and like Benjamin Stockham from About a Boy is probably one of the better child actors I've seen on television and my god is his smile infectious. This is where the show begins to make creative differences and changes the story of Adam F. Goldbergs life, instead of casting a third brother he decided to gender bend his third sibling and cast Hayley Orrantia who adds a good flavor to the male studded cast of the show and is a delight to watch as we can see how she and her mother (in the show) are so similar in the way in which they look after the family.

But by far the most stand out cast member in the show is Wendi McLendon-Covey who plays Beverly Goldberg. For me she is the glue that holds the cast together with her over loving nature and brings more emotional moments to the show that truly drive the fact that this show is a family comedy much like the Middle. That isn't to say the rest of the cast isn't amazing buy Wendi is a character who I believe the show can not function without at the moment until the rest of the cast start to stand out more. I will say that I really enjoy the relationship that Beverly and Murray have with each other and their kids which really make this show enjoyable.

The episodes of the show are based on video tapes Adam F. Goldberg took as a child which are re enacted and dusted with creativity before becoming proper episodes of the Goldbergs and I really appreciate how Adam F. Goldberg adds snippets of the real footage he took at the end of each episode to show that in some way or another these events did happen. On top of the real life footage this show really excels in it's music choice, every episode we are treated to songs of the 80s which just put a smile on your face as the songs aren't just playing but they mirror the situations going on in the show almost perfectly (A good example is the halloween episode). Another thing that I really enjoy about the show is how it takes you back to the 80s (of what I know from tv and movies) which most shows can't do. Did I also mention that this show is littered with 80s references and amazing 80s music?

After watching 20 episodes in around 2/3 days I can safely say this show is now on my list and I look forward to seeing what other adventures the Goldbergs get into. My only hope is that in future episodes the situations that the characters get into are funnier (like the Middle) but if they stick to the same formula they have now I'll still be a happy man. If anyone is looking for a show that is a nice easy watch and in the vein of the Middle or want a trip back to the 80s definitely check out the Goldbergs, I promise you won't be disappointed.
